what is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and it if its high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The work "Reiki" is made of two Japanese words - "Rei"  means "God's wisdom or the Higher Power" and "Ki" means "Life force energy.  So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

A Reiki treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including the body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.

Many have reported miraculous results.

Reiki is a simple, natural and a safe method of spiritual healing and self improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutical techniques to relive side effects and promote recovery.

The History of Reiki:

Dr. Mikao Usui,  The Father of Reiki (1865-1926)

  • Born in August 15, 1865 in a small village of Taniai in the Yamagata district of the Gifu prefecture (near Nagoya).

  • Studied Kiko (Japanese version of Qi gong) at the Tendai Buddhist temple on sacred Mount Kuruma, north of Kyoto during his youth.

  • Traveled to Japan, China and Europe studying medicine, psychology, religion and spiritual development.

  • Married Sadako Suzuki and had 2 children

  • Worked as a private secretary of the politician Shinpei Got who was the Secretary of the Railroad, the Postmaster General and the Secretary of the Interior and state, and Mayor of Tokyo in 1922.

  • Owned and operated his own successful business. In 1914 when his business declined, he became fell on hard times.  He became a Buddhist monk and returned to Mount Kurama.

  • On March 1922 Dr. Usui had an enlightening experience or "satori" after a 21 day retreat on Mount Kurama

  • On April 1922 he moved to Tokyo and started the healing society of "Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai." He opened a clinic in Jarajuku, Aoyama near the Meiji shrine. He later developed 6 levels for his training (level 6 to 1  wherein level 1 being the highest).

  • In 1923 the great Kanto earthquake devastated Japan an d killed over 140,000 people which started a tremendous demand  for Reiki.

  • In 1925, Dr. Usui opened a larger clinic in Nakano, Tokyo to better accommodate the earthquake survivors.  He traveled throughout Japan and taught over 2000 students and trained his first 16 Reiki teachers.

  • On March 9, 1926, Dr. Usui died form a cerebral apoplexy while teaching a Reiki class in Fukuyama. He is buried at the Saihoji temple in Suginami-Ku, Tokyo.

The Five Reiki Principles

The Five Principles were originally created by the Meiji Emperor who ruled Japan from 1868-1912. Dr. Usui added them to his Usui Reiki Ryoho (Healing) as a model for humanity - "In order to achieve the proper (spiritual) path for humanity, we must live according to these principles, and possibly as an ethical structure on which to build the Reiki organization."

After many years of personal searching, Dr. Usui discovered a spiritual secret: Reiki.  Reiki is a method of "freeing one's mind and body." He believed that through practice, we could first heal our mind and then the body would alight and become healthy on its own - "The mind and body are one," he said. His goal with the Usui Reiki Ryoho was to assist people to heal themselves and free "fellow human beings form illness and emotional suffering" thereby exponentially increasing happiness and joy in the world.

The Three Pillars of Reiki

Dr. Usui based his system for his Reiki healing method on The five Principles of the Meiji Emperor and the Three Pillars: Gash, Reiji-Ho and Chiryo.

GASSHO (Two hands together)

The Gassho Meditation is practices in the morning and evening along with saying the Five Principles - both verbally and from the heart - as a mantra. The purpose of this meditation is to clear the mind an allowing  you to expand you consciousness to experience the divine.

Reiji-Ho (Indication of the Reiki power - methods)

Reiji-Ho incorporates three steps before each Reiki session:

1. Put your hands in the Gassho position in front of your heart and ask to be connected to the Reiki energy and for the Reiki energy to flow through you. you can utilize the Reiki II symbols to add more focus to this request.

2. When you feel the Reiki energy, evoke Spirit. God for the healing and well-being for the client on all levels. (physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually) for their highest and best good "thy will be done."

3. With our hands still together, raise them to your third eye and ask the Reiki power to guide and assist you during the session.

Chiryo (Treatment)

After Reiji-Ho, go to the body and allow your intuition coupled with the Reiki energy to guide the Chiryo. If you do not feel directed, put your dominant hand over your clients crown chakra and wait for a prompting as to the next step.

"The Paved Highway of Belief through touch and sight leads straightest into the human heart and the precints of the mind."- Lucretius

As long as the spirit is strong, the body will follow for the body is forever the slave of your mind and can be willed to achieve great feats.

A strong positive mental attitude will create more miracles than any wonder drug.
