The Lymphatic (Immune) System

The Lymphatic System is composed of lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels and specialized lymphatic organs such as tonsils, thymus and spleen. The function of the lymphatic system is to clean plasma and prevent toxins form taking over the body. This system is essential to the body's defense mechanism, filters out organisms that cause disease, produces certain white blood cells, and generates antibodies. It is also important for the distribution of fluids and nutrients in the body. It drains excess fluids and protein so that tissues don't swell up. The lymphatic vessels are present whenever there are blood vessels and they transport excess fluid to the end vessels without the assistant of any pumping action. The lymphatic system and the cardiovascular system are closely related structures that are joined by a capillary system. The body is able to eliminate the products of cellular breakdown and bacterial invasion through the blood flow , the lymph nodes and into the lymph.

There are more than 100 lymph nodes, located mainly in the neck, groin, armpits, and scattered all along the lymph vessels. These act as barriers to infection by filtering out and destroying toxins and germs. The largest body of lymphoid tissue is the spleen. Two significant party of the lymphatic system are the right lymphatic quarter which drains lymph fluids from the upper right quarter of the body above the diaphragm and down the midline, and the thoracic duct which drains the rest of the goby. It is throught eh actions of this system that our bodies able to fight infection and to ward of foreign invaders.

The lymphatic system drains and filters fluid that helps to form tissue and produce lymphatic about items comprised of :

  • Lymph Vessels
  • Ducts
  • Lymph nodes and fluids
  • Spleen
  • Tonsils
  • Thymus
  • Appendix
